Improving water quality starts at home. Your septic system plays a bigger role than you might think. The Columbia Basin Conservation District (CBCD) offers a Septic Rebate Program to help homeowners living in Moses Lake maintain their systems while reducing nutrient pollution. If you qualify, you can receive up to $800 for a septic inspection, pumping, or minor repairs.
Why Septic Systems Matter for Water Quality
Septic systems are designed to safely treat wastewater. When they are not properly maintained, they can become a source of pollution. Excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus can seep into the soil. From there, they can reach nearby lakes, rivers, and groundwater.
These nutrients can fuel the growth of harmful blue-green algae, especially during warmer months. Regular maintenance helps keep your system functioning properly and also protects the water we all depend on in Moses Lake.

Expanded Eligibility
You don’t have to live directly on the Moses Lake shoreline to make a difference. This program is expanding to include homeowners in areas near the lake, such as Pelican Point and Cascade Valley.
How the Rebate Program Works
Getting started is simple:
Sign up for a Shoreline Nutrient Assessment (SNA) and complete at least one of the recommended practices
Ask your SNA team leader if you qualify for the reimbursement program
Fill out the reimbursement eligibility form
Wait to receive an email telling you that you are eligible
Get your septic tank inspected, pumped, or minor repairs done up to $800
Submit receipts to your SNA team leader
Receive a reimbursement check for up to $800 in the mail within 30 days
The program makes septic maintenance more affordable while also helping improve local water quality.
Who Should Consider This Program?
This rebate is especially helpful if:
Your septic system has not been inspected or pumped recently
Your system is older
You want to be proactive about protecting water quality
Even well-functioning systems need regular maintenance to keep working properly.
A Simple Step with Big Impact
Maintaining your septic system may not always be top of mind. However, it is one of the most effective ways to reduce nutrient runoff and improve water quality. By using this rebate program, you save money. You also help reduce pollution, prevent harmful algae growth, and support a healthier Moses Lake.
