We are excited to announce the 2022 Moses Lake Carp Classic will be held on Saturday, May 21st.
For those of you not familiar, you might be wondering, why is removing carp in Moses Lake so important? We turned to Elliott Delong with the Grant County Conservation District (GCCD) to learn more.
"Moses Lake has a large legacy load of phosphorus trapped in lake sediments. Carp tend to feed on the bottom resulting in phosphorus in the sediment being re-exposed to the environment. Fewer carp mean less bottom disturbance, less phosphorus back into the environment." - Elliott Delong, GCCD
Phosphorus is the key nutrient that determines blue-green algae growth. While natural sources occur locally, artificial sources such as lawn fertilizer and organic waste and increased disturbance by carp can contribute to the nutrients available for increased algae growth.
